Eadweard Muybridge’s life stands at the crossroads of science, art, and the
fragile human psyche. With this film, I set out not only to explore the birth of
cinema but also to examine how the storms within a man’s mind can ignite a
historical revolution.
Muybridge’s head injury didn’t just turn him into a murderer, it transformed him
into an artist obsessed with freezing time. This duality, genius and madness,
brilliance and destruction, lies at the heart of the film. The courtroom’s logic,
the autopsy room’s clinical analysis, and the emotionally charged flashbacks of
love and betrayal all reflect different facets of this inner conflict.
Visually, I placed special emphasis on the concept of time - a broken watch,
frozen frames, echoes of the past… all elements that circle back to one of
cinema’s most fundamental questions - Can we freeze time? And if so, at what
cost?
In the final moment, the phrase “AND CINEMA WAS BORN” is not just a historical
milestone, it is the culmination of an internal collapse, a crime, and a
creation. Muybridge’s tragedy becomes cinema’s first spark, leaving the audience
with one lingering question - Is genius sometimes just a reflection of madness?
