Yurt Dışına çıkmaya kaçmaya çalışan bir insanın bir günü…
The Ladder
Directing by Mustafa Yeşil
The actor who has to go abroad because of a political case is playing cross
flute. In the meantime, a woman whom we think might be the wife or the girl
friend of the actor is sleeping insensibly despite the noise of the television
and the sound of the flute in the bedroom which can be also seen from the living
room. After a while, the actor gives up playing the flute and he heads towards
the bedroom. He dresses up. He returns to the living room and starts rolling a
cigarette. After rolling the cigarette, the actor returns to the bedroom and he
wears his coat, then he heads towards the door of the flat. He wears his shoes
and goes out from his flat. In front of the door of his flat he lights his
cigarette which he has rolled inside the flat. In the meanwhile, from the next
flat the sound of pop music comes as a parallel to the feelings of unawareness
and insensitivity which dominates the whole apartment. The actor is startled by
the sound of a couple who are fighting due to financial difficulty. After being
convinced by the normality of the situation the actor proceeds on his way.
Coming to the below floor, the actor eavesdrops on the death of the workers
which is one of the biggest problem of Turkey. On the television, the workers
who have died at a dock are being mentioned. But, the actor does not find this
subject to be worth being watched as a parallel to the stress on the
insensitivity which dominates the whole movie; he proceeds on his way again.
Descending the next floor, the actor comes across with the concerns of a
national party about the government that is one of the main problems of Turkey.
For a while he listens to the door of the flat from which the sounds are coming
then he descends another floor. At that point his phone rings. On the phone he
tells about the reasons which push him to go abroad, to the person opposite of
him and in Kurdish he tells of possibilities that he might goes through if he
stays in Turkey. The actor will be imprisoned if he stays in Turkey and
certainly he has to flee abroad. When the actor is in on the phone, the azan
calls to pray. Finishing his phone call, the actor descends another floor. On
this floor he witnesses a dialogue between a mother and her daughter which is a
different reflection of the Kurdish problem. The actor listens to this door for
a while. He sees a group of students, trying to change the electric meter to use
illegal electricity. Hearing the footsteps, the students flee their flat. We see
our actor on the basement. The actor heads towards the outer door of the
apartment. At that point, he realizes that the cigarette which he has lighted at
the exit of his flat is about to finish. He throws away the cigarette randomly
to the bin in the garden. There are two books in the bin. The first book is that
Is There any Creator Who Is Interested in You? The second one is that Bernard
Lewis' The Birth of Modern Turkey which emphasizes on the Modern Turkey that
causes all the antidemocratic practices and problems, seen through the ladder.
After a while the book in the bin starts burning. The azan continues praying.
